As a 9th generation American descendant of formerly enslaved Africans, I used to long for my own culture. Not American culture, not Black American culture that was trendy and accessible to any and everyone. My own culture that represented me and that was sacred to and protected by people like me.
Hearing that Africans didn't like Black Americans and some thought we were lazy and should be more successful as a group due to our access to the American Dream made me question if I truly wanted to visit Africa. I feared the disappointment I might develop from negative encounters with locals, but boy was I wrong.
Not only have I had nothing but positive, loving and welcoming reactions from Nigerians, Senegalese, and Ghanaians, but by leaving the US and connecting with the Motherland and her descendants, I found what I'd been searching for. I found my peace and my joy. I found myself. My most authentic self.
